R&D Engineering Technician

Burlingame, CA
Our client is seeking an R&D Engineering Technician to help them with their goal of bringing innovative sequencing diagnostics instruments to market.  This position with the Platform Development instrument engineering team is a hands-on role in the design and development of new instruments. You will work with engineers from multiple teams and disciplines (mechanical, electrical, and systems engineering) to assemble, troubleshoot, and repair prototypes and instruments under development.
 
Responsibilities:
  • Working within a cross-functional engineering team to assemble, troubleshoot, and repair R&D instruments
  • Mechanical assembly and small-scale fabrication
  • Assembling and troubleshooting microfluidic tubing and fittings
  • Electrical/electronic assembly and integration; PCBA troubleshooting and basic SMT rework/repair
  • Building cable assemblies; wiring of low-voltage power and communications connections
  • Integrating mechatronic systems, such as motors, valves, pumps, controllers/drivers, sensors, etc.
  • Running tests to collect and analyze the performance of a system
  • General shop organization and maintenance
  • Working with prototype vendors
  • Working within the context of design control SOPs and a quality management system
 
Qualifications:
  • 3–5+ years of related experience
  • Strong communications skills; ability to work from drawings, as well as written and verbal descriptions
  • Proficiency with a variety of hand and small power tools
  • Experience with standard electronics testing equipment (oscilloscope, logic analyzer, etc.) and hands-on debugging/troubleshooting
  • Proficiency with Linux a plus
  • Experience using Python, Perl, or similar scripting languages, or exposure to embedded software development a plus
  • Familiarity with medical products and instrumentation and associated requirements
  • Experience with IVD product development a plus
 
Physical Requirements:
  • May be tasked with lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling up to 25 lbs., if able to do so.
  • Must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time and walk/stand for moderate periods of time.
  • Must be able to bend at the knees and waist frequently
  • Must be able to repetitively use a telephone and a computer mouse and keyboard.
 
 
All employment is contingent on candidates passing a background check and providing at least two positive professional references from prior managers.
